Dine in Historic Elegance
This house was built in Lebanon on preston Road by T.J. Campbell some time after the Civil War and during the cattle trail drives to rail heads further North. The town of Lebanon was established on Preston Road in 1858 by the Harringtons, the Raineys and the Shelburnes. These men came to the area as part of the Peters Colony settlement. Lebanon was a pleasant farm village until the cattle drives gave it new business and notoriety.
Preston Road was part of the Shawnee Trail over which trail drivers took Longhorn herds up past Fort Gibson and Baster Springs to northern markets.
T.J. Campbell, who was born in Kentucky, built this house immediately following the time at which he opened a dry goods store in Lebanon. He was an early type cash and carry store. The book titled "Lebanon on the Preston", authored by Adelle Rogers Clark and published by Hennington Publishing Co., Wolfe City, Texas, has the following interesting quotation about Mr. Campbell--"He sells no goods on credit, but offers his dry goods, tinware, queensware and groceries that defy all competition. He (Mr. Campbell) has created a stir in the Lebanon market, and people for miles go to his store in search of those bargains they are sure to find."
In 1902 the railroad came through the western part of Collin County. Unfortunately for Lebanon, the railroad missed the settlemant. The City of Frisco was established because of the railroad and mail service. This caused considerable movement by people in small villages throughout the area to the rail location. In 1903 Mr. Campbell moved this old house to Frisco. He also established a mercantile store in Frisco.
The home is constructed of lumber hauled by wagon train from Jefferson, Texas. The siding and windows are of cypress, and the "gingerbread" was added after the move.
The people who have owned this house since Mr. Campbell are as folows: Taylor, Carpenter (an early M.D. in the Frisco area), Hays, Wilson, Sontag, McCallum (who acquired the Historical Marker Status) and now the BURKS clan.
Across 5th Street at 6990 Main Street is "The Main Place Antique Mall" currently owned by the O'Neil Family. The building, constructed about 1915, was originally a Model T Ford showroom owned by the Carpenter Brothers. This is one of the few buildings left standing after a fire in 1922 destroyed most of the town of Frisco on the north side of Main Street. Many of the antiques and lighting fixtures that you see throughout our Restaurant are furnished by "The Main Place Antique Mall".
